Beneath the Surface — Oxford Street section

01 / BENEATH THE SURFACE

[architectural project]

Roles

Subterranean spaces are often overlooked and underutilised, however they have the potential to play a vital role in fostering community and shaping cultural landscapes. The underground represents a medium for a heightened sense of self expression and escapism, offering a refuge removed from the structures and boundaries of the above ground urban territory. This project intends to revitalise Oxford Street through an underground cultural hub and an activation of unused alleyways. Through an architectural process of deterritorialization, we depart from above to explore alternative modes of expression.

Reflective pools and undulating paths create a dynamic museum experience, guiding visitors through a journey of water and light. The architecture transforms the interior into a series of intimate, interconnected ponds, using movement, curves, and reflection to immerse visitors in a contemplative exploration of maritime history and the fluidity of space.

50 Martin Place is reimagined as a civic stage, where the historic facade dissolves into a porous amphitheatre and subterranean gallery, inviting the public to witness, explore, and engage with the workings of finance while tracing the paths between ASIC and Macquarie's North Tower.

Student accommodation often lacks an element of community and social interaction within its inhabitants, leaving students isolated and alone in a place filled with others who are sharing the same experience. Located on the edge of Parramatta Road, my student accommodation attempts to nurture the complex creation of communities and encourage the social interaction of its inhabitants. Following the natural slope of the site, the scheme adopts the floor plates slope downwards from paramatta road, placing each unit on a slightly different level. This staggering provides a sense of vertical privacy and demarcates the space between each family. Each unit is simultaneously staggered, yet integrated, achieving both breadth and intimacy.
